Gardening Business Startup Costs: What to Budget For

The real cost categories behind starting a gardening business — not invented figures, but what actually drives your costs up or down.

Rather than hand you a made-up 'it costs £X to start' figure, here are the real cost categories to budget for, and what drives each one: equipment (mower, strimmer, hedge trimmer, hand tools, PPE — new vs. second-hand and petrol vs. battery-electric make a big difference); vehicle (purchase/lease or use of an existing one, plus running costs and any trailer); insurance (public liability, tools cover, and Employers' Liability if/when you take on staff); registration and certification fees (waste carrier registration if relevant, plus pesticide or chainsaw/tree-work training if you're offering those services); business admin (minimal for a sole trader — HMRC registration itself is free); marketing (website, business cards, local advertising); a working-capital buffer to cover the gap before you're paid and quieter seasonal months; technology (invoicing/scheduling tools); and secure storage for tools, chemicals and fuel. The biggest single driver of cost variation is how many specialist services you plan to offer from day one — a general mow-and-maintain operation needs far less capital than one also offering tree work or pesticide application.
