Getting listed on well-known business directories does two things for a gardening business: it gives you a link back to your website from an established, trusted site (which helps local Google search rankings), and it puts you in front of people who are actively searching for a gardener right now, not just browsing.
General directories worth a free listing: Google Business Profile (the single most important one — covered separately in this Kit), Bing Places, Yell, Yelp, Facebook (a business Page plus relevant local community/selling groups), Nextdoor, and Thomson Local.
Trade-specific platforms matter more for gardening than general directories, because customers comparing gardeners — especially for bigger one-off jobs like a garden makeover, landscaping project, or tree work — often shop around on these sites and request several quotes at once: Checkatrade, Bark, Rated People, TrustATrader, and MyBuilder are all well-established UK platforms covering gardening and landscaping. Most work on a pay-per-lead or subscription model rather than being free, and vetting/verification requirements vary — check each platform's current terms before signing up.
If you do landscaping or garden design work specifically, two sector bodies run their own "find a professional" directories: the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) at landscaper.org.uk, and the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI). Both list members by business type and location, but both also have membership requirements (the APL requires at least two years' trading history and an inspection before you can join) — these are accreditation routes to grow into, not a day-one listing for a brand-new business.
A few practical notes: keep your business name, address, and phone number identical across every listing (Google and other search engines use this consistency as a trust signal); before-and-after photos of garden transformations perform particularly well on visual-first platforms and in directory profiles; and seasonal work (spring tidy-ups, autumn leaf clearance) is worth refreshing your listings and photos for, since search interest for "gardener near me" shifts noticeably through the year.
No directory guarantees you customers — treat this as improving your odds of being found, not a replacement for the other marketing approaches in this Kit.
