Directory Listings & Backlinks: Getting Your Mobile Hairdressing Business Found Online

Why listing your mobile hairdressing business on well-known directories helps local SEO and brings direct bookings — and which directories are actually worth your time.

Beyond your Google Business Profile, listing your business on other well-known directories does two things at once: it gives you a backlink (a link pointing back to your website or booking page from another site), which is one of the signals Google uses when deciding how to rank local businesses, and it puts you directly in front of people actively searching those platforms for a mobile hairdresser. Neither effect is guaranteed or instant, and no single listing will transform your bookings on its own — but a consistent presence across the directories your actual clients use is low-cost, low-effort, and compounds over time.

General local directories worth setting up (free, in addition to Google Business Profile): Yell, Bing Places for Business (Microsoft's equivalent of Google Business Profile — free, and worth doing since not everyone searches on Google), Thomson Local, Facebook (a Business Page, plus joining relevant local community groups and, where appropriate, Facebook Marketplace), and Nextdoor, which is specifically built around neighbours recommending and finding local tradespeople and is a strong fit for a mobile, home-visit service. Yelp has a smaller UK presence than in the US but costs nothing to claim and keep updated.

Hair-and-beauty-specific platforms are worth separate consideration because they function as both a directory and a booking system: Fresha is free to list on (Fresha takes commission on new-client bookings made through the platform, not a subscription) and is genuinely used by independent and mobile hairdressers across UK towns and cities, not just salons — check current terms directly on fresha.com before signing up, as commission/fee structures can change. Treatwell is the UK's largest salon marketplace and a well-known consumer search destination, but it's historically been salon-premises-focused — check directly with Treatwell whether mobile/home-visit providers are supported in your area before committing to their listing terms (which have included a subscription plus commission in the past; confirm current pricing yourself).

Before listing anywhere, make sure your business name, address/service area, and phone number are written identically everywhere (this consistency itself is a known local-SEO factor), and that your profile photos are genuinely strong — for hairdressing specifically, before/after colour and styling photos do more work than almost anything else on a directory listing, since clients are choosing a hairdresser largely on the visual evidence of their work. As with every marketing channel in this Kit: no directory guarantees you bookings — the value comes from consistent presence across the ones your actual clients use, kept accurate and up to date.
