What the rules say
You don't need a formal qualification to offer general foot care, but you must never describe yourself as a "podiatrist" or "chiropodist" -- both are HCPC-protected titles. In practice, insurers, care homes and professional associations expect recognised training regardless. Public liability insurance remains legally optional for a sole trader but is about as close to essential as cover gets, given the physical contact involved in this work.
Quick answers
Do care homes in March expect any particular checks or certificates?
Many care homes across March expect to see evidence of relevant training, insurance, and often a DBS check before letting a practitioner treat residents -- it's worth having these ready before approaching local homes.
Can I treat diabetic clients as a non-HCPC foot care practitioner in March?
Many Foot Health Practitioners in March do work with diabetic clients, but for complex or high-risk diabetic foot conditions it's standard practice to involve the client's GP or a registered podiatrist rather than treat alone.
How often do foot care clients in March typically rebook?
Foot care is generally a recurring need every few weeks rather than a one-off treatment, which is one reason practitioners in March often build a predictable round of regular clients over time.
What equipment do I need to start in March?
At minimum, practitioners starting out in March need basic instruments, sterilisation equipment, and appropriate clinical waste arrangements -- the Foot Care Business Launch Kit sets out the full starter list.
