Gardening has a low barrier to entry -- there's no general licence to 'be a gardener' -- but a few specific activities carry real legal requirements you'll want to know before your first job in Balerno and the wider City of Edinburgh area.
What the rules say
General garden maintenance needs no general licence anywhere in the UK. Where the rules do bite is activity-specific: take a client's garden waste away yourself and waste carrier registration likely applies (Environment Agency in England, SEPA in Scotland, Natural Resources Wales in Wales), and chainsaw or pesticide work brings its own certification requirements on top. As a sole trader, public liability cover remains optional in law but expected in practice.
Quick answers
Do I need equipment of my own to start in Balerno?
Most new gardeners in Balerno start with core equipment -- mower, strimmer, hedge trimmer and hand tools -- building up as the client round grows rather than buying everything up front.
Can I offer one-off tidy-ups as well as regular rounds in Balerno?
Yes -- many gardeners in Balerno mix one-off clearance jobs with regular maintenance rounds, which helps smooth out seasonal demand across the year.
Do I need a licence to be a self-employed gardener in Balerno?
No general licence is required for general garden maintenance in Balerno. Specific activities -- waste removal, chainsaw/tree work, pesticide application -- have their own registration or certification requirements.
Do I need to register as a waste carrier to work in Balerno?
Likely yes, if you take clients' garden waste away yourself as part of the job anywhere in the UK, including Balerno. Confirm directly with the Environment Agency, SEPA or Natural Resources Wales depending on where Balerno sits.
