See what's inside the Gardening Business Launch Kit — £22Thinking about starting a gardening business in Canonbury? Gardening has a low barrier to entry -- there's no general licence to 'be a gardener' -- but a few specific activities carry real legal requirements you'll want to know before your first job in Canonbury and the wider Greater London area.
What the rules say
Gardening itself needs no general licence in the UK. What does need sorting: waste carrier registration if you remove clients' garden waste yourself, and separate certification for chainsaw/tree work or pesticide application. None of this is a barrier to getting started, but it's worth knowing before you take on jobs involving these specific tasks. Public liability insurance stays optional in law for a sole trader but expected by most clients.
Quick answers
Can I use pesticides as a gardener in Canonbury?
Applying certain pesticides commercially requires specific certification, regardless of whether you're working in Canonbury or elsewhere in the UK. Many gardeners choose to avoid this route entirely and focus on cultural/mechanical methods instead.
Do I need equipment of my own to start in Canonbury?
Most new gardeners in Canonbury start with core equipment -- mower, strimmer, hedge trimmer and hand tools -- building up as the client round grows rather than buying everything up front.
Can I offer one-off tidy-ups as well as regular rounds in Canonbury?
Yes -- many gardeners in Canonbury mix one-off clearance jobs with regular maintenance rounds, which helps smooth out seasonal demand across the year.
Do I need a licence to be a self-employed gardener in Canonbury?
No general licence is required for general garden maintenance in Canonbury. Specific activities -- waste removal, chainsaw/tree work, pesticide application -- have their own registration or certification requirements.
