Dog Walking vs. Dog Day Care vs. Home Boarding — What's the Difference?

These three pet-care activities have very different UK licensing requirements. Here's the boundary that actually matters.

These three services are often lumped together in casual conversation, but they sit in genuinely different legal categories.

Dog walking — collecting or meeting a dog and walking it, with no overnight stay and no day-long care beyond the walk itself — is not a licensable activity under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018.

Dog day care — looking after a dog during the day, beyond a single walk, typically at the carer's own premises — is licensable under this scheme.

Home boarding — an overnight stay of someone else's dog at the carer's own home — is also licensable, with its own statutory guidance and inspection regime.

If you only ever collect, walk, and return a dog the same visit, you're operating in the unlicensed category.

The moment a business adds day-long care or an overnight stay, it moves into a different, separately-licensed activity with its own application process, inspection, and ongoing conditions.

Know which one you're actually offering before you advertise it.
