Employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement, but only once you employ someone who isn't a close family member — a solo self-employed practitioner doesn't need it. Public liability insurance is not confirmed as a general legal requirement for a solo, non-HCPC practitioner, but it is overwhelmingly expected commercially, and most care homes will not allow an uninsured practitioner to work with residents. Professional indemnity insurance covers claims about your treatment decisions, and some professional associations require it as a condition of membership. Don't treat any single scheme's published cover limit (e.g. a specific £5m or £10m figure) as an industry-wide legal minimum — these are product-specific numbers, not statute.
