What you need to know about CQC registration, training and getting started -- specific to Portsea and the wider Portsmouth area.
Starting a mobile earwax removal business in Portsea? Whether microsuction or ear irrigation (or both), the question of CQC registration depends on whether a listed healthcare professional is involved in your business -- this genuinely isn't a flat yes-or-no, and resolving it directly with CQC should come before you take a single booking anywhere in Portsmouth.

Mobile Earwax Removal in Portsea
What the rules say
The single most important question in this category is whether your specific practice needs to register with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) -- and it genuinely depends on your circumstances. CQC's own guidance states earwax removal becomes CQC-regulated only when a listed healthcare professional is involved in agreeing and delivering the treatment; sources disagree on exactly how this applies to a non-HCPC-registered mobile practitioner doing mechanical removal only. This isn't something to guess at -- contact CQC directly about your own circumstances before taking bookings. No qualification is legally required to offer microsuction or ear irrigation, though the training and insurance market in practice expects a recognised course. Whether a DBS check applies is also genuinely unclear from current guidance -- the official DBS eligibility tool is the recommended way to check. Public liability and professional indemnity insurance aren't a confirmed legal mandate for a sole trader, but they're treated as close to essential given the nature of the work.
Questions about starting in Portsea
Why has demand for private earwax removal grown in Portsea and across the UK?
A number of NHS areas have withdrawn routine ear syringing from GP surgeries in recent years, which has visibly grown the private market -- a pattern reflected across Portsea and Portsmouth as much as anywhere in the UK.
Can I offer both microsuction and ear irrigation in Portsea from day one?
You can, but the two methods aren't interchangeable for training, equipment or insurance purposes -- confirm your cover and training for each method you intend to offer in Portsea, rather than assuming one naturally covers the other.
Do I need to register with the CQC to start a mobile earwax removal business in Portsea?
It depends on whether you, or anyone in your business, count as a listed healthcare professional under CQC's own test, and whether one is involved in agreeing and delivering the treatment. This genuinely isn't settled for every practitioner type -- contact CQC directly about your own circumstances in Portsea before taking any bookings.
Is microsuction or ear irrigation the safer method to offer in Portsea?
This is a clinical question this guide can't answer -- sources disagree, and the right method for a given client depends on their individual ear history. Whichever method(s) you offer in Portsea, make sure your training and insurance specifically cover it.
